Results for Saucony London 10k, 14th July
Matt Sharp 00:29:47 (3rd Overall)
Chris Newnham 00:32:25 (12th overall)
Elliot Tyler 00:55:38
Ryde Harriers Matt Sharp and Chris Newnham both had great runs in the London 10k through the main parts of the city in a huge field of 18000 runners.
From the gun Matt was soon into his running and matching stride for stride with Seyfu Jamaal as they passed the first kilometre in a fast 2min 53 sec.
Through 5km in 14min 45sec the pair were still together and despite Sharp’s attempt to drop Jamaal the Ethiopian based youngsters was strong enough to increase his pace as the finish approached to record a time of 29 min 41 sec for the victory.
Despite hanging on bravely, Matt was pipped on the line for 2nd place by the American Jared Ward who had finished 6th in the Rio Olympics and recorded 2min 49 sec, 2 seconds adrift of Ward.
Matt hasn’t run a serious 10k for a number of years and was delighted with a sub 30 minute clocking.
Unfortunately, Chris got stuck in a crowd of runners in such a huge field early on in the race but aggressively got into his running to find clear road. He passed the halfway point in 15min 53 sec, a little down on his planned pace but battled it out with athletes around him to finish in an excellent 12th place from the 18,000 participants in 32min 25 seconds and was disappointed not to get inside of his personal best.
This London course has many turns and switch backs that do not lend itself to fast times.
Both Matt & Chris are part of a strong Ryde Harriers men’s team and will be competing again very soon.

Results for Davos X Trail Marathon, 1,424m Assent, Switzerland, 28th July
Matt Sharp 03:44:50 (5th Overall)
After his excellent 3rd place at the London 10km, Ryde Harrier Matt Sharp took on a very different challenge when competing in the Davos X Mountain Marathon in Switzerland.
The race is over a 42.7 km distance (just over a marathon) and consists of a long climb finishing at 2,738 metres of altitude for the first 24 kilometres on trails before a severe downhill of 19 kilometres to the finish. The uphill gradient is so tough in parts that the athletes have to walk and the downhill section so long and steep it shatters the legs.
Matt was his usual competitive self, and was not far from the leaders at the summit but found the downhill very demanding and technical in comparison to the French and Swiss specialised mountain racers.
Despite a number of falls and not being able to feel his legs, Matt pushed on to finish in an outstanding 5th place covering the distance in 3hours 44min 50sec. His best time for the traditional marathon is 2hours 16min, showing the severity of this event.
Matt will take time to recover from this effort before resume to training and taking on conventional road racing.
