Race entry for all runners is £7 (cash only).
Entrants MUST have competed & finished at least one of races 1 & 2 in the series to be able to run. Your best finish time for races 1 & 2 is used to calculate your handicap start time for race 3.
Runners will have individual start times, based on your handicap; it is your responsibility to be at the start line in time for your start. Start times will be available at registration.
Pre-Entry List:
To minimise the time taken to process entries on race day, if you hope to run in any of the races, please enter your details in the pre-entry list event (£0), so a list of runners & clubs can be generated.
Please only use the name of your first claim club, which will be used for the teams.
You can still enter on the day even if you are not on the pre-entry list, it just speeds up registration.
Race entry is still on the day entry only (£7 cash only).
Race Info:
All race entries are on the day (Cash only), please bring the correct change if you can. Registration is open from 10:00, Smallbrook Stadium top floor.
All races start at 11:00 prompt.

Minimum age for entry is 15 years. This is due to sections of open road and road crossings on the route.
Changing and showering facilities are available at the venue, ground floor. Please leave muddy shoes outside.
Cross-country spikes can be used at the runner's discretion, otherwise trail/fell shoes are definitely recommended. However, be aware that there is a 270m section of road, with only a narrow verge, near the start and the finish. As well as two road crossings, all of which will NOT be carpeted.
Runners are permitted to use the track to warmup, but please use the access gate by the stands if the vehicle gate is not open.
The course will be marked, with a combination of arrows and tape. Checking for traffic is YOUR responsibility at the road crossings. Please keep to the edges of fields, where the course is marked so, to avoid trampling on farmers' crops. Please close all gates that were closed when you encounter them.

MU17, MU20, Senior Men and 10 year vet categories. Teams of 3.

The Hampshire Road Race League (HRRL)

Is an annual series of road races for all runners from participating clubs.

There are twelve races in the season, from September to June, the distances vary from 5 miles up to half marathons. These are all road races, although some may have short sections of gravel track etc, so road shoes are recommended. Some of the races have sections of closed road, or use very quiet roads, but in general runners will be sharing the road with normal traffic.

Who can participate?
Anyone! Any member of Ryde Harriers entering one of the league races automatically contributes to the club’s team score. This year we would like to encourage more members to take part in the HRRL races, particularly the ladies, so we can field greater numbers of runners in our teams. This will reduce the pressure on individuals to run lots of races to make up team numbers as some of the races are quite close together.
Do I have to commit to be part of the team?
No! The teams are not a fixed set of people, you automatically become part of the team whether you just run one race or several. A men’s team is made up of 4 runners and 4 for a women’s team. Incomplete teams will receive less points for a race compared to complete teams. Having complete teams for most races can be enough to move the team up a couple of positions in the league.
But am I fast enough to be part of the team?
You don’t have to be fast to make a big contribute to the team’s final score. The team’s position within the league takes into account the number of runners in each team. A fast but incomplete team will be placed below a slower but complete team.
What’s the Cost?
You have to pay for the entry fee of the race and these vary between £10 and £20 for each race. For HRRL races Ryde Harriers will refund reasonable transport costs after the first £10 per runner. Ask our treasurer for a claim form.
Is it fun?
Yes! It’s great to race against a larger number of runners that are at a similar speed as you, as well as the friendly rivalry with other clubs. We even find time stop off at the pub on the way home from some races.
How do I enter one of the HRRL races?
All the races in the league provide online entries, some still provide postal entry as well. Enter online like you would any other race. Remember to choose the ‘Affiliated’ option and provide your England Athletics (UKA) registration number, which you will have been notified of when you joined the club. You usually get a small discount when choosing the ‘Affiliated’ option.
When should I enter one of the HRRL races?
Enter as soon as you can! Most of the league races are very popular and will fill up fast, well before the closing date for online entries. From experience, we recommend entering 6 to 8 weeks before the closing date of online entries. We will try and advise you if any of the races are starting to fill up fast. If you miss out because the race has filled up, there is some times the opportunity to get a transfer place from runners that have had to withdraw their entry, transfers are usually notified on the HRRL facebook page ‘HRRL Hampshire Road Race League’. Most of the mainland races don’t provide on the day entry because they are usually full and only a small number were available at the Ryde 10 last time. To avoid disappointment please enter online.
How do I get to a HRRL race?
As most of the races are on the mainland we try and arrange group transport for these. This may be meeting at the Red Jet/Fast Cat and getting taxis on the other side. Or car sharing for some of the more distant races. The club captains will let you know what the arrangements are prior to each race, usually via facebook.
What do you need to bring to a HRRL race?
A condition of contributing to the club’s team score and getting the ‘Affiliated’ entry fee discount, is that all runner must wear club colours. Runners must run in a Ryde Harriers vest/t-shirt when representing the club. Most races are chipped timed, running numbers and chips are usually collected at registration on the day. Remember to leave enough time to pick them up, there may be queues at some of the big races. As with all road races headphones or ear-pieces of ANY kind cannot be worn for these events and will result in disqualification.
Tell me about HRRL Team points
Club teams score points through the success of their runners and the series culminates in awards to the highest placed teams in the leagues. The men’s team position is calculated based on the best 9 team results out of the 12. The women’s team position is calculated based on the best 8 team results out of the 12. Clubs can have multiple teams and these enjoy a wide participation of runners of all standards, abilities and ages.
Tell me about HRRL Individual points
There are separate leagues for women and men, individuals score points from their finishing positions in the races. Individuals that have completed 7 or more races get a position in the league at the end of the season, their position is calculated based on the best 7 results. There is usually a commemorative mug given out to the top 60 runners (last year it was top 100) for each of the men’s and ladies leagues.
Where can I see the Team & Individual positions?
The current league positions, as well as results from individual races can be found on the HRRL website. Links to online entries for each of the race can also be found on the website. https://www.hrrl.org.uk

There are five fixtures in the season from October to February. These are all cross-country races mostly on wet grass so off-road shoes are essential, some may have sections of gravel track or cross over paved paths and some faster runners sometimes opt for spikes depending on the conditions on the day.

Who can participate?
Any member of Ryde Harriers can take part in these league races and contribute to the club’s team score. As some of the races are on the same weekend as HRRL races, we would like to encourage more members to take part in the HXCL races, particularly the ladies, so we can field greater numbers of runners in our teams. This will reduce the pressure on individuals to run lots of races to make up team numbers
Do I have to commit to be part of the team?
No! The teams are not a fixed set of people, you automatically become part of the team whether you just run one race or several of them. A men’s team is made up of 5 runners and 3 for the ladies team.
But am I fast enough to be part of the team?
You don’t have to be fast to make a big contribute to the team’s final score. The team’s position within the league takes into account the number of runners in each team. A fast but incomplete team will be placed below a slower but complete team.
What’s the Cost?
There is no entry fee for these races, it’s just turn up and run. Ryde Harriers pay a club fee for the season. IOWAC charge £20 per person (runner/spectator) for transport, which includes the hovercraft and coach. For HXCL races Ryde Harriers will refund reasonable transport costs after the first £10 per runner, so it works out as £10 for the day out. Ask our treasurer for a claim form, but club captains normally sort this out.
Is it fun?
Yes! It’s great to race against a larger number of runners that are at a similar speed as you, as well as the friendly rivalry with other clubs. We also get to support the junior runners from IOWAC who compete in the morning races.
How do I enter one of the HXCL races?
No pre-entry is required. We will publicise the races on facebook in the weeks prior to the fixture just so we can work out how many will be travelling, but there is no need to do anything other than turn up.
How do I enter the Cross-Country Championships?
Pre-entry is required. We will publicise the race on facebook in the months prior to the fixture just so we can work out how many will be travelling. Full entry details can be found Here .
How do I get to a HXCL race?
All the fixtures are on the mainland, we try and arrange group transport for these, which is usualy car sharing. The club captains will let you know what the arrangements are prior to each race, usually via facebook. You can make your own arrangements if that suits you.
What do you need to bring to a HXCL race?
Runners must run in a Ryde Harriers vest/t-shirt when representing the club. The races are not chip timed and there are no numbers for runners to wear. On crossing the finish line you will be given a finish position number, a bit like park run. The numbers are then collated by the club captains and presented to the race organisers. The full results are usually published on the league website within a couple of days. As well as your running gear, you will need a full set of clothes to change into afterwards as the course can be very muddy by the time we get to race. Changing facilities can be limited to none, so as a team we bring at least two pop-up tents so we can dump our kit in them. Walking boots/wellys and waterproof clothing are essentials. We have several hours before our races so we walk the course and then support IOWAC in their junior races. There is usually a burger van, café or a pub nearby where we can get breakfast. We usually have to make a quick exit after the men’s race to catch the hovercraft, so bring a packed lunch/post-race nibbles.
Tell me about HXCL Team scoring?
Club teams score points through the success of their runners and the series culminates in awards to the highest placed teams in the leagues. The men’s and ladies team position is calculated based on the best 4 team results out of the 5 races.
Tell me about HXCL Individual scoring?
There are separate leagues for women and men – individuals score points from their finishing positions in the races. Individuals who have completed 4 or more races at the end of the season have their league position calculated based on the aggregate of all their results.
Where can I see the Team & Individual scores?
The current league positions, as well as results from individual races can be found on the HXCL website. Links to online entries for each of the races can also be found on the website https://www.hampshireathletics.org.uk/events/hxcl.html
We will be running some intermediate sessions on Tuesdays at the running track at Sandown (Fairway), the session will be a reduced version of the main training session. These will be 6pm to 7pm at the running track. Details of the sessions will be published with the main session on the club app. Additional information may be displayed in table below:
